While studying rocks and fossils we learned that the process of deposition results in layers of various sediments. To model this process we had some dessert catastrophes that resulted in "layers" of many different sediments. The end result was a tasty illustration of how rocks eventually become sedimentary rocks.

History: Making Cuneiform TabletsIn social studies we have been learning about ancient civilizations. We recently read about how the Ancient Sumerians developed a type of writing called cuneiform. They would use wet clay from the river and form it into tablets. They would then use a stylus made from a stick to press their writing into the clay. The students got a chance to see what it was like to write in Ancient Sumer. Check back later after we make our mummy! We are studying about Egypt also.

Science: What Makes Wind?In science we have been trying to answer the question,"What makes wind?" We did several experiments to better understand air and how it works. We learned that air takes up space, it has weight, and also that it has pressure. The students learned that wind is caused when warm air rises and causes an area of low pressure. The cold air then moves in and that is what causes wind. As we gain a better understanding of weather, we hope to do even more experiments.
