_Welcome to Mrs. Kirkland's Class!

Our class is made up of 1st and 2nd graders. We come from across the island and across the world, including China and United States. Ours is an active class. You may find us on the floor with a pillow reading a favorite book or making a mess with our experiment showing how blood moves through our body. Throughout the day we move from one area of the room to another as we actively learn about ourselves and the world around us. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with all that we have going on!
Mathematics

From dominoes to dice, students learn math skills using more than just pencil and paper. The classroom can be found full of blocks, scales, rulers and measuring tapes. Even their homework has them going through kitchen drawers in search of cups and spoons, or measuring the foot size of everyone in the family. Students work with real life objects to learn real life lessons. The best part is, they have FUN doing it.

Reading is our favorite time of day. Everyone has their favorite reading space and plenty of books from which to choose. Whether we are reading to ourselves, reading with a partner or listening to a read-aloud, we love our books!
Social Studies is the time when we learn about our world. We learn to find ourselves on the map as well as other peoples of the world. We compare and contrast land and climate, food and customs. We find that the people in other parts of the world are more like us than they are different from us.
